Why are your text messages not being delivered?

<aside> 📖 In the U.S. and Canada, application-to-person (A2P) type messaging was historically not allowed to be sent using local 10-digit long code phone numbers. Verizon Wireless began accepting A2P messaging via 10-digit numbers (A2P 10DLC) in January 2019.

In 2021 text message companies and mobile carriers launched a registration-based A2P 10DLC solution, which permits A2P messaging via long code to United States recipients.

Wireless carriers in the U.S. and Canada apply message filtering for two reasons.

  1. Carriers filter messages to protect mobile subscribers from spam and other unwanted messaging.
  2. Some carriers apply filters to detect and block non-registered Application-to-Person (A2P) messages.

Carriers in the U.S. and Canada use machine learning software systems to filter messages. These systems look at message content and volume like email filtering systems. Messages receive a cumulative score based on factors including how many messages have come from a phone number during a certain time, how many similar messages have transited the carrier’s network, or whether the contents resemble known spam or unwanted messages.

What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P 10DLC refers to a system in the United States that allows businesses to send Application-to-Person (A2P) type messaging via standard 10-digit long code (10DLC) phone numbers. Carriers in the US consider all Twilio traffic to be A2P. Carriers’ A2P 10DLC offerings provide better delivery quality and lower filtering risk than long code SMS of the past, using the same phone numbers.
